In conversation with Mike: Fascism on your doorstep

We found Mike lingering on the outskirts of the anti-fascist counter demonstration to the Britain First Protest that was taking place in Manchester. Mike lives in the centre of Manchester and had come out to see what was going on. There was a lot of anger and aggression on display that we'd both witnessed, as the police penned in and herded a group of counter-protesters, who would not be forced into submission. It was all unfolding in front of a crowd of passers-by, as well as legal observers - making it feel all the more poignant. Though strangely, after spending some time amongst this atmosphere, the adrenaline and compassion appeared to be wearing off, and it felt all too normal.

Mike was openly in support of the counter protesters, stating that its an important function of the political system to be able to protest. Though he fears getting involved could be dangerous for him, given the displays of police abuse of power.

Mike had been in a Buddhist study group for a while, and through contemplating his way of being, he wishes to get involved in the political conversation without following an avenue of hate. Though acknowledging it tends to be the acts of protest and injustice that bring attention to the topic. He believes that bringing people together will bring positive change.

I noticed that after we stopped recording, Mike felt more at ease with the conversation. I wonder how our discussion would've unfolded if I hadn't have been recording. I'm curious to explore how we could enable more open, honest and easy conversation. I guess there feels a certain pressure to say the right thing when you know you are being recorded, and in a sense, you can lose the essence of a conversation. That's all for now.
